Keeping your skin look youthful after 40 with these tips

Over the years, our bodies change, and people have some images in their mind about how a person of a certain age looks. And the number one reason for a comment “No way you’re 40! You look so much younger!”, is good skin. Our skin shows a lot, and while we can’t reverse the aging process completely, we can slow it down a bit.

Now there’s nothing bad about looking 40, but just in case you want to hold it back for a few years, here’s what to do:

Why this happens

You may have heard of collagen and elastin, but you might not know what they are or what they do. Basically, they are chemicals in your skin that make it elastic and plump, and the less of them you have, the more your skin will sag and you will get wrinkles. There are also other things that can lead to your skin being less quality.

Start caring for your skin early on

Excess unprotected exposure to the sun, smoking and an unhealthy diet can all make your skin look and feel older. Now if you are reading this and you are in your 20s, then listen well, because the key is – prevention. Start doing all of these things on time, and you won’t have to worry about this for a long time.

What to change

Let’s talk moisture: your skin is begging for it. Make sure that after washing your face daily, you always use a good quality moisturizer. If your skin is very dry, try to only use very mild soaps (my trick for that is using products made for babies!). Another important daily step is applying sunscreen, if your moisturizer doesn’t already have some SPF. If you are using a toner, make sure it’s non-drying, because even if you have oily skin, drying it out artificially will only make it produce more oil, so take good care of it!

Exfoliate your skin

Another practice that is good to remember is exfoliation. Our skin creates new cells all the time, and if you have old cells sitting on top of them, it prevents your skin from absorbing the moisture you are giving it. Exfoliate once per week (two times tops, and only if you have very oily skin) and make sure that whatever exfoliator you are using is mild – the last thing you want is to over-exfoliate and damage your skin.

Care for your skin

Among other things, make sure that you’re drinking enough water, because hydration comes from within and if you are going to be sitting on a long plane ride or going to be spending a day on the beach, make sure you go well prepared.

So how the heck do you choose? With all the products on the shelves, how to choose what’s best for your skin? Well, there’s no miracle cure, if that is what you are asking, but here are a few guidelines: Look for products that have hyaluronic acid, because that helps with the appearance of fine lines.

Another important ingredient is retinol. Retinol helps with the overall appearance of your skin and decreases imperfections. Opt for a good quality, cruelty-free brand like Ultraceuticals, or choose whatever is accessible to you, and what you think will work best for your skin. Always look for best available quality, because your skin deserves no less, especially if you want it to remain soft and supple for years to come.
