What Should You Know About Rosacea Treatment?

Millions are affected by this facial skin disorder

Rosacea is quite a disturbing condition because it cannot be cured. It's a chronic skin disorder that affects all ages. There are four types of rosacea, three that affect the skin and the fourth one that affects the eyes. Rosacea (pronouced roh-zay-sha) is characterized by facial redness and dillated blood vessels, which can cause social and psychological problems if left untreated.

However, treatment is available only in the sense that symptoms can be controlled. Some of the treatment options are left up to you, like avoiding the triggers, while others will be prescribed by a dermatologist like at the London Dermatology Centre. In order to help you learn more about treatment options available, here are the most important things to remember.

Rosacea Trigger Avoidance

Rosacea can be triggered by many factors. You will need to keep what is known as a symptom diary. As you identify the patterns that lead towards rosacea flare-ups, change lifestyle and habits in order to prevent the problems.

Skin Treatments and Medications

Treatment by doctor
Some Rosacea treatments are done by doctor, which include specific treatment options with creams, gels and pills
Treatment depends on rosacea type. Most of the oral medications and creams available on the market will be helpful for those suffering from papulopustular rosacea. Symptoms in this case include facial flushing, tiny red cheek lines and small pimples.

Skin treatments can be useful for those that suffer from other rosacea types, although not enough help will be received. Even if the symptoms disappear, medication may be necessary in order to stop new flare-ups from appearing. Creams and drugs can be combined under medical supervision.

In specific scenarios the doctors will prescribe antibiotics. This is not due to the bacteria that causes rosacea. Such medication is offered in order to help deal with the symptoms by relieving pimple like problems and swelling.

Specific Treatment Options

Here are two specific treatment options for rosacea:

 Gels and Creams

A prescription gel or cream is usually the first treatment option used by doctors. These products are used on the face up to 2 times per day. Examples can be given in MetroCream or MetroGel, which include topical metronidazole. Some antibiotic creams can include erythromycin and clindamycin. Azelaic acid will be recommended by some doctors with tretinoin being highly common in cases that are really hard to treat. Common side effects that can appear include skin irritation. At the same time, some of the products will never be prescribed for pregnant women or women that want to become pregnant.

 Antibiotic Pills

In the event that ointments do not work, doctors will always recommend the use of antibiotic pills, sometimes together with skin creams. Ocular rosacea is normally treated with antibiotic pills. The most common substances used in such pills are minocycline, metronidazole, erythromycin and doxycycline. Treatment usually lasts around six months.

Alternatively doctors can also prescribe isotretinoin. However, this does bring in some serious side effects so medics prefer not to use these options.

Other Used Rosacea Treatments

The dry eyes that are caused by ocular rosacea can be treated with the use of liquid tears. At the same time, the eyelids have to be cleaned every single day with the use of warm water. Eye doctors are usually consulted in order to prevent other problems from appearing. If there are visible blood vessels that appear or redness that is caused by the condition, laser treatment can be used. Surgery is an option that is taken into account when dealing with rhinophyma, which is a rare rosacea form that will cause the nose to deform and swell.
