5 Tips for Preventing Tooth Decay

How to avoid cavities in your teeth

In order to be able to deal with your everyday tasks, you have to take proper care of your health. This also means you will have to be extremely careful when it comes to your dental health. Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic diseases among both kids and adults. According to some studies, restoring a decayed tooth can cost you even up to $2000 over your lifetime. Not to mention that tooth decay can be extremely painful and cause other health problems. That’s why it’s important to prevent cavities before they appear. And here are 5 tips that will help you do so.

Tooth decay in early stages
A lack of proper dental hygiene leads to development of tooth decay,
in amongst other dental health problems.

Make Your Dental Hygiene Kit

Make up your own dental hygiene kit, to keep your dental health problems at bay.

There are number of products you will have to get in order to prevent tooth decay. First of all, this means that there should always be at least one toothpaste in your home so that all family members can brush their teeth twice a day. You will also need a quality toothbrush. Just make sure you change as soon as it becomes worn out.

Mouthwash is another helpful product you should consider buying. Still, make sure you don’t use it right after brushing as this will reduce the effect of fluoride in the toothpaste. Using mouthwash in the middle of the day is a much better idea.

Try Some Effective Brushing Techniques

Brushing isn’t always as simple as it seems. It’s very important that you choose your toothpaste carefully. You should always use a fluoride toothpaste with at least 1350 parts per million while those with 1000 parts per million are the best choice for kids. Also, there’s no need to use too much paste when brushing. A pea-sized amount of toothpaste is all you need for an effective brushing. It’s very important that you brush long enough and reach all the surfaces of your teeth. According to the experts, brushing for at least 2 minutes is an absolute must.

Get regular dental check ups
Regular dental checkups will help you to detect any potential dental health problems early on
and take necessary steps to prevent them from happening.

Make Changes in Your Diet

There’s no need to say that sugar is bad for your teeth. It’s not all about the amount of sugar but the frequency with which it is consumed as well. That’s why you should always try to avoid sweets, sodas, energy drinks and processed foods. Even if you have healthy snacks, foods such as fruits and power bars, these can also contain quite a lot of sugar and are still bad for your teeth. On the other hand, increasing your vitamin D and calcium intake can do wonders. You can add more calcium into your diet by drinking milk or smoothies and by eating beans and low-fat cheese. Here's more info about foods and dental health.

Brush your teeth 2-3 times daily
Brushing and flossing should be part of your regular oral hygiene routine after each meal

Floss at Least Once a Day

Flossing is another thing you should do every single day if you want to prevent cavities. Of course, if you have enough time, flossing right after each meal is even more helpful. This is especially the case if you are eating popcorns or any other food that can get stuck in your teeth. Many people choose to brush their teeth once again instead of flossing which is a big mistake. By flossing, you are able to reach all the areas you can’t reach with a toothbrush, and that way you are removing more food particles from your mouth. These are what attracts bacteria and eventually causes cavities.

Get Regular Checkups

Brush regularly
Prevention of tooth decay is always better than pain and discomfort that come with having cavities

No matter how much effort you put into keeping your teeth healthy, you should always schedule regular appointments with your dentist. This way you will regularly get a thorough assessment of your oral health. If your dentist detects any issues, these can be dealt with before they become more serious.

A dentist from Sydney advises that you should schedule at least two appointments per year. 3 or 4 annual appointments might be necessary for people with a high risk of dental disease. This group includes smokers, diabetics, pregnant women and people with gum diseases.

Since dealing with tooth decay can cause a lot of pain and discomfort, doing everything you can in order to prevent it is always recommended. All of the 5 tips mentioned above are guaranteed to help you keep cavities at bay.
