The Effects of Noise Pollution on Our Health

6 loud noise consequences that can affect our health

Noise pollution is one of the main causes of high stress levels. Many people suffer from anxiety issues precisely because they were frequently exposed to noise pollution. According to research, noise interferes in complex task performance, modifies social behaviour and causes annoyance. Moreover, World Health Organization reports that traffic noise alone is harmful to the health of almost every third person in Europe.

Loud music can cause hearing loss
Modern technology and our habits of listening to loud music, especially via earphones or
headphones, make it very hazzardous to our overall health and wellbeing.

Hearing Loss

If a person is exposed to a noise louder than 85 decibels, he or she is likely to suffer from a hearing impairment. Therefore, it’s important that anyone who is constantly spending time in a loud environment try to cut down on noise exposure. Eventually, if the noise pollution is not reduced a person can suffer from a permanent hearing loss.

Insomnia

Noise pollution level higher than 45 decibels is likely to wake up a majority of people. Light sleepers, on the other hand, could be affected by noises at lower decibel levels. Insomnia could consequently cause a wide range of serious health conditions, including loss of focus, irritability, exhaustion, or even a weakened immune system. Furthermore, it could also raise stress levels, and increase the chance of serious heart disease.

Noise disrupted sleep can cause insomnia, which in turn can lead to other
serious health consequences.

Heart Problems

Our brain processes noise as danger signals. Consequently, they provoke a stress response in the body, which releases various hormones. The hormones that are released cause high blood pressure increase in heart rate, which leads to serious heart problems. Eventually, these stress responses affect both heart and the cardiovascular system.

Migraines

The more we are exposed to the noise pollution, the worse our health will be. People who are regularly exposed to noise are at the biggest risk of being affected by headaches and migraines. The most common short-term effects of noise pollution are migraines, which can be highly unpleasant and prevent a person from concentrating.

Stress

In addition to migraines, stress is another negative effect of noise pollution. Constant exposure to unpleasant noise causes people to feel stressed out, and prevents them from living a healthy life. Stress is especially harmful because it leads to forgetfulness, memory problems, and anxiety. Reducing stress levels is highly important because it can eventually lead to more serious problems, such as depression, heart attack and stroke.

Psychological Problems

In addition to heart problems, insomnia, migraines and hearing loss, noise pollution can also lead to some major psychological problems. Noise is considered one of the reasons people suffer from mental health issues. Namely, it is assumed that noise accelerates and intensifies the development of latent mental disorders. Neurosis, hysteria, and psychosis are just some of the very serious mental problems that noise pollution can cause, which is why it is imperative that people cut down on noise pollution as much as possible.

Isolate your home from outside noise
Take steps to properly isolate your house, including doors and windows, to reduce the effects
from outside noise pollution, be it road traffic or other noise-inducing factors.

Cutting Down on Noise Pollution

One of the ways to avoid too much noise is to soundproof the home and workplace. One of the best ways of soundproofing concerns putting rugs on hardwood floors and installing double glazed windows from Sydney.

Protect your hearing against loud noise
Our hearing gets affected the most by loud noises and noise pollution
If you have tiles and linoleum, feel free to cover them as well, since they will require additional padding. Cut-pile carpeting is the best for absorbing sound because of its fuzzy top.

Furthermore, floating hardwood can be an excellent solution to soundproofing. A gap between the subfloor and the actual floor will serve as a perfect sound damper.

If you are looking for an item that will both absorb and block the sound, draperies is the best solution. Namely, velvet and wool are heavy materials, which are perfect for draperies that will serve as a sound absorber.

Noise pollution is a very serious issue, and it’s essential that we try to reduce it the best way possible. Avoid any health problems by soundproofing the house or even moving to another place if the noise is too loud. Nothing is more important than your health.

If you suspect having hearing problems, get your hearing checked up by a trained audiologist for a timely prevention of hearing loss.
