Tackle Career Health Concerns Head On

How to deal with important workplace health concerns

Your career will impact on your health
Whether you have an office job, or are taking up a different career road, your job will inevitably
have an impact on your health and wellbeing. (Image by Pixabay.com)

We spend around thirty percent of our adult life at work on the job. Another ten percent is spent in traffic and around twenty-five percent is taken up by sleeping. This means that we could be spending more time at work than we do at home or with our families. We’re sure you’ll agree that this is a worrying statistic and it is one you need to think about when you’re looking after your health. Essentially, it’s just as important that you are happy in the office as you are at home. So, let’s look at some of the problems that you might have to deal with in your business and think about how to fix them. Or, at the very least, how to tackle them head on.

Job Satisfaction

We’ll start with a major concern today. Just over fifty percent of people aren’t happy in their job and if even one person wasn’t happy where they worked that would be a problem. But fifty percent? That’s nothing short of an epidemic because if you’re not happy for thirty percent of your life, it is going to impact your health. You could deal with serious mental issues such as depression and even suicidal thoughts. It is fair to say that being unhappy in your career may also cause a fair amount of stress.

which also involves some form of physical exercise. (Image by Pexels.com)

The best way to deal with this situation might be to look for a different job where you are going to be happy. It can be difficult to find work on the job market these days but if you look for a job while you already hold a position you can eliminate some of the pressure. This means that you can take your time finding a position that suits you and that could ultimately make you happy.

Or, if you don’t want to leave your current job, you can think about improving a position that you’re already in. You can do this perhaps by seeking out a promotion. A promotion will almost always lead to more job satisfaction because you feel a higher appreciation and often get higher levels of pay. Alternatively, you can speak to your employer about improvements to the office environment that you believe would make it a better place to work. Remember, as an employee you do have rights.

Emotional Wellbeing

Does your work make you happy?

a
position that suits you better, or move on to a new job. (Image by Pixabay.com)

There are plenty of career issues that can impact on your emotional wellbeing. For instance, you might find that you are constantly feeling stressed in your job. If that’s the case, you need to think what is causing you stress and how you can fix it. You might be surprised to learn that both breathing exercises and exercise, in general, can reduce the level of stress that you feel on a daily basis. You can combine both of these by practicing yoga exercises before or after work. You may even want to take some yoga classes to learn the stretches that could help your body and your mind.

Of course, stress can also be because you’re not getting the right amount of sleep to complete a full day of work. It’s possible that you are trying to operate on a max of two hours in bed. While it is possible to function at this level, you won’t be reaching your full potential. You’ll constantly find that your memory, your mind and your intellect fail you in the office. This can make a job far more difficult.

The answer to this issue would undoubtedly to make sure you are getting the right amount of sleep each day. To do that, you need to calm your mind before your bed hits the pillow. Try writing about anything that is bothering you before you close your eyes. This will give you a sense of closure before you effectively close the book on the previous day. You can keep a diary or even try blogging. Just make sure you do have an outlet for anything that is bothering you. If that doesn’t work, blinking has been shown to tire eye muscles and give a sensation of fatigue.

You might also want to think about keeping a check of emotional issues in the office itself. Your business should have a support system in place to help you deal with any problems that you may encounter. With something like critical incident stress management by Health Assured it is possible to deal with any issue that you might face in the office related to emotional wellbeing. Ask your employer whether there is something like this in place. If there isn’t, you may want to notify them it’s their duty to provide it and ensure a healthy work environment.

RSI is one of office work health issues

Physical Health Issues

Finally, there are plenty of physical health issues that you may have to deal with in the workplace. One of the most common would almost certainly be RSI. Repetitive strain injury affects millions of workers every year. The issue will start with a tight feeling in the fingers, wrists, and hands. It can then grow into a chronic pain that doesn’t fade or disappear. Instead, it becomes a constant ache and gets worse as the year's progress.

As such, you should ignore anyone who suggests that something like RSI isn’t a serious issue. It definitely is and it’s just one of the problems you can encounter in the workplace. RSI is caused by typing for long periods of time without the right support and often with poor posture. It can be prevented with regular breaks and the right chairs and desks. For instance, experts believe adjustable desks are useful. This means that workers can alternate between standing and sitting through the day while typing.

If you feel you are at risk of any physical issues in the workplace, speak up. Contact your manager, employer or anyone else in charge. Let it be known that you feel as though your office is not protecting your health and safety. Try to get support from your fellow employees. Most people don’t speak up because they are worried as being seen to cause problems. But if it’s affecting your health you do need to take action.
