Why The 12 Steps
Isn’t The Only Way to Overcome Addiction

There are other ways to treat addiction

When it comes to the subject of addiction there are several different methods that can be used to help you, or someone you know to get over it. The goal always remains the same, to beat whatever you are addicted to and to look deeper inside yourself to work out why you are addicted, curing the addiction and the personality is one and the same and the first step is to face up to whatever it is that you are battling with, then, and only then can you start going about beating it. Traditionally speaking, there was always the implementation of a 12 step plan to beat your addictions, whilst this is a plan that works for many addicts, it isn’t the be all and end all of addiction treatment.

Treat your addiction to get better
Whether you use the 12 step program or other methods to treat your addiction, it should
help you feel again part of the society and not dependent on substitutes to feel good.

Non 12 Step Program

Many rehabilitation centers in California have been leading the way in recent years with addiction treatment, levels of addiction in the California state have been growing steadily in recent years especially when it comes to drugs with 9% of residents admitting to using illicit drugs in the last month in a recent survey. As such treatment centers are ramping up their efforts and many are even implementing the use of a non12 step rehab plan, here are the pros and cons of using a 12 step and non 12 step plan.

Pros of Using a 12 Step Program

Here are some of the positive aspects of the 12 step program:

  • Provides you with a community to fight your addiction with and a strict guide for how to go about it.
  • Helps you to take responsibility of your own problem and how best to address it.
  • Helps the destigmatization of drug addiction
  • Gives you the stability of weekly meetings, something to look forward to, a way to keep your plan on track and friends who will support you.

Cons of the 12 Step Program

Then there are the negative aspects of the 12 step plan:

  • Requires the belief in God or a higher power, 6 of the 12 step relate to a belief in God.
  • Ignores the issue of mental illness, it may help with your addiction but it ignores the root psychological causes of addiction, 37% of alcoholics and 53% of drug addicts suffer from mental health illnesses.
  • Very often ignores the physical side of addiction, medical check ups aren’t specifically recommended nor are the consequences of withdrawal
Addiction and dependence
When you develop a dependence on some substance, it will lead to poor health,
which should be immediately treated using one of the ways for dealing with addiction.

It should be noted that many addicts have had great success with both the 12 step program and the non 12 step program. The decision for which program largely comes down to the individual and their willingness to quit their addiction. If you know someone who is looking to deal with their addictions then you will be best served if you do plenty of research on the many different programs available before they undertake a particular path. The sole responsibility of overcoming addiction relies on the willingness of the addict and it is vital that they have a true desire to give up their addictions, there is always more than one option and if one doesn’t work then you should encourage them to move on to another until they find success and can become addiction free.
