What to Do If You Keep Waking Up
in the Middle of the Night

How to prevent waking up at night, for a restful sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep is key to feeling rested and energized in the morning. If you’ve been struggling to stay asleep and keep waking up in the middle of the night, you know how difficult a lack of sleep can be. Here are a few things you can do to get a more restful (and peaceful) sleep.

sleep-disrupting habits can also keep waking you up at night. (Image: Pete Linforth, Pixabay)

Create a Sleep Routine

One of the first steps you can take to get better sleep at night is creating a supportive sleep routine. The body functions best when it knows what to expect, so if you’re having difficulty staying asleep, it could be due to a lack of routine. Set yourself up for sleep success by going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning. After several days, you’ll find yourself sleeping easier and more soundly through the night.

Sleep on an Empty Stomach

Going to sleep on a full stomach is a recipe for waking up in the middle of the night, due to the fact that your body will have difficulty reaching a completely restful state. Instead, schedule your last meal of the day at least two hours before bed. Doing so will help ensure that you can fall asleep and stay asleep until your morning alarm.

Avoid Naps

For many adults, naps are some of the biggest obstacles to sound sleep. If you’re napping in the afternoon, you may find yourself having difficulty not only going to sleep, but staying asleep for the entire night. If you’re feeling tired enough to take a nap, you may not be getting enough sleep to begin with. Creating a sleep routine will help you avoid naps and feel rested in the morning.

Clean Your Space

Another useful option for reducing your chances of waking up in the middle of the night is to take a look at your sleep surroundings. Is there junk on your surfaces? Do you have clothes strewn on the floor? Sometimes having clutter in your bedroom can lead to increased feelings of stress and anxiety, thus leading to poor sleep.

De-Stress Before Bed

Another option for a more restful sleep is de-stressing before bed. Meditation could be a useful tool for helping set your mind at ease. If you aren’t ready for a meditation practice, simply making a list of your thoughts before you go to bed can help clear your mind, so you don’t wake up worried in the middle of the night.

Limit Alcohol

While many people assume alcohol will help them get sleep, that’s actually far from the truth. Alcohol may make you initially feel relaxed in the moment, but it will lead to disturbed sleep later on. Limiting alcohol will help ensure that once you’re asleep, you’ll be able to get all of the sleep you intended.

Waking up in the middle of the night is one of the most frustrating experiences. The good news is that you don’t have to tolerate it as your new normal. By incorporating a few of these tips into your life, you could greatly improve your life for the long-term.
